Asking for Help

If I asked you to name an epic friendship, what would immediately come to mind? I always think of Frodo and Sam. I think of their shared journey, shared grief, and shared pain. I think of their stalwart loyalty, combined strength, and shared joy. I think of how Samwise carried Frodo when he couldn’t carry Frodo’s burden. I think of how my friends have sometimes carried me through difficulties and how much it meant to me.

That moment was very powerful because sometimes we can’t ease the suffering of our loved ones. We can’t unbreak their hearts or magically heal their wounds. All we can do is support them while they go through the hardship.

I’m fortunate to have such a friendship. I’ve long called her Elf, and she’s always called me Hobbit, but when I went through a period of darkness in my own life, I called her my Samwise.

Now, I think it is time for me to become Samwise for a moment.

It can be hard to ask for help for ourselves, but that’s why our dear friends, our very own Sams, are such a treasure. They carry us when we have to face our own Mount Doom. They help us when we don’t have the words to even ask. They can’t carry our burdens, but they can carry us for a little while, and they can help get us through the darkness to whatever comes next.
